>> still a couple of hours away. but grab the umbrella because we are expecting light rain on and off, mid to late morning through maybe late afternoon. 38 degrees is the temperature and reagan national. 39 at dulles. most at or above the freezing mark -- hagerstown, martinsburg, winchester petersburg, all could see a wintry mix before it warms up and up after the noon hour to see just light rain. we do not think it will be a major deal for anybody today and temperatures are the big bonus with today's forecast, we will be above average and see high temperatures near 50 degree mark this afternoon. expecting a bit cool down by tomorrow. we will have details in just a few minutes from the belfort furniture weather center. the traffic, so far so good? >> it has been relatively quiet coming from the west. 66, a stalled car near nujtley but it is clear out of the travel lanes.

control. you can see the massive response on the ground. several fire trucks and crews on the scene -- it broke out just before 5:00 this morning in the 1800 block of peach tree lane in bowie. we know a house next door to the home also sustained little damage. but the house where the fire started is a complete loss, according to prince george's county fire chiefs on the scene. we do know all the folks who live there got out ok. that is the good news. as you can see from up ahead the entire back half of the home and the majority of the home is a complete loss. no word yet on what caused the fire. we are going to get information. we do have a clue on the scene in bowie as soon as their new details. back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you so much. we want to travel to manassas where another fire is the focus of attention. it broke out around 11:00 p.m.

on lady jane loop. >> and a cop -- an apartment complex. john gonzalez is on the scene. >> a lot of fires throughout the area. here in manassas, it took as many as 60 firefighters to put this one out. a handful have to be rescued. they were trapped inside. does take a look at the extent of the damage. two of the firefighters were taken to hospital for observation. a resident also transported for smoke inhalation. this was a massive fire. at least 24 apartments condemned. the cause is still unknown. but we do know it started inside a third floor unit late last night. that is where the roof collapsed with firefighters underneath. >> at least one of the units requested a may day, a call for a firefighter assistance. those firefighters were rescued from the third floor. they are ok.

>> the flames so intense firefighters had to fight it with aerial ladders from outside. about 60 people have been displaced. according to the early investigation, $300,000 worth of damage. the cause is still under investigation. reporting live in manassas -- john gonzalez, abc 7 news. >> 6:05 right now. the developments from south africa -- prosecutors formally charged double amputees printer oscar pistorius with premeditated murder in his girlfriend shooting death. >> at the bail hearing prosecutors say pistorius fired into the door of a bathroom where reeva steenkamp was hiding after a valentine's day shouting match. pistorius cried as his lawyer insisted the shooting was an accident. these new details, just as the reeva steenkamp's family gathers to say goodbye. family members of the model, law

a bit of a breeze and chilly temperatures. let's look at the extended forecast and talk about the rain today and chilly temperatures tamara and the breeze which limited the cold. highs and the upper 30's tomorrow afternoon. sunshine but the wind will make it feel cooler. by thursday, closer to 40 so unseasonably cool all the way through friday with high temperatures note -- near 40 degrees. we could end up with sleep changing to rain and then the rain could last into the first part of the weekend saturday. the warmest of today will be right near 50 and then by sunday, near 50 degrees. and the average, by the way, is 48. >> it was nice, when i woke up i thought, i am not that cold. maybe i in getting used to it. as we get the road running overhead with a news chopper 7. maryland -- positive news.

funds, you are probably feeling good. diana perez has more. >> topping america's money -- bouncing back. two good economic signs this morning. the dollar opened only 1% below its high before the financial meltdown -- the dow. and two-thirds of mutual funds posted new highs as the recession. wal-mart executives calling february sales a total disaster and the worst start to a month in an internal e-mail. the executive to blame in part the payroll tax increase that kick in january 1. office supply chains are reportedly talking about a merger. office max and office depot have been hit hard by the economy -- as well as rivals. burger king is not loving this. the twitter account was attacked yesterday. for a while, the name and logo both changed to mcdonald's and the message said burger king had been sold because the war had flopped. that is america's money.

>> welcome back. 6:25 right now -- and we are finding out allegany public schools on a two-hour delay. you can always find updates that wjla.com. russian authorities want to know what led to the death of a young boy adopted by a texas family. >> russian investigators say the 3-year-old was abused and murdered by his adoptive mother back in january. texas authorities say they are investigating the claims but no one has been arrested so far. this comes weeks after russia announced it was banning all american adoptions in retaliation for a new u.s. law targeting a legit human rights violators in russia.

royal family watches may get their first official look at the dutchess of cambridge's baby bump later today. >> kate middleton has not made a public appearance since last december. she is expected to visit a house for women in recovery and a charity on addiction is hosting the event. a houston couple is very excited about their newborn baby. >> but this has a bit of a twist. she gave birth to the four baby boys on valentine's day. but the catch is -- actually two sets of identical twins. not quadruplets. they say they just wanted a sibling for the two-year-old son but when they went to a specialist last year they got a big surprise. >> he was quick to say right away, you have four. of course, and just cannot believe it. if i was not already laying on the table, i would be on the floor. >> i am excited and waiting for the challenge.

new this morning -- a fire at a bowie home is under control but it caused extensive damage. the fire broke out on the home on peachtree lane around 5:15 a.m. this morning. the home is destroyed. one nearby also suffering some damage. but the good news is everyone got out safely. >> in manassas, following another fire that broke out last night around 11:00 p.m. this was so severe that the roof collapsed at some point, forcing a mayday call. >> everyone was accounted for but a lot of people without a home this morning. john gonzalez is on the scene in manassas to talk about more what happened. >> this was an intense fire. at least 60 firefighters had to come out. fire and rescue still out that the scene, as well as best racing crews. -- restoration crews. a group of the firefighters

killed. >> we are expecting grief counselors to be on hand at suitland high school as students return from their president's day break. let's go out to brianne carter who is live at a high school with the latest. >> in just a matter of hours students will return to school and it could be a difficult day for many of them as word spread about the death of a 15-year- old. investigators are searching for suspects in the murder of a 50- year old boy in hillcrest heights. -- 15-year-old boy. >> authorities as a just after 4:00 monday afternoon, the high school student was found on the ground of around 28th avenue with trauma to his upper body. he was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. investigators talked to people living in the immediate area to find out if anyone heard are saw it anything. some residents say this particular radio is quiet.

it is spokesperson says the armed and masked men crashed through the perimeter fence with two cars and pulled off the highest within minutes. north korea facing the economic sanctions from the european union after the communist country conducted its third nuclear test. the actions have drawn strong warnings from south korea's outgoing president saying it will further isolate the country. north korea says its nuclear program is in response to what it calls a u.s. threat. the police chief of the violence and mexican border city of -- a border city is missing. a state prosecutor is investigating the disappearance. local media reports two of his brothers were found fatally shot sunday inside the trunk of a car. one was a federal the investigator. nuevo laredo -- they have been fighting a bloody turf battles in that city. president obama will receive a distinguished honor on his trip to israel, set to receive the

confinement. he claims being confined to a cell 24 hours a day for the past 15 years despite a record of good behavior is unconstitutional. he is serving a life sentence plus 240 years for an attack that killed six people and injured more than a thousand. the overall unemployment rate is going down but younger military veterans are still finding a hard time. the unemployment rate for veterans between 18-24 years old was over 20% last year and also in the double digits for veterans between 25-34 years old. the problems have continued despite a wide range of public and private efforts, including tax breaks for companies who hire veterans. >> department of defense nominee chuck hagel is hoping to quell criticism about his views toward israel and iran. he reportedly described the state department as an adjunct to the israeli government. that statement along with his

position on nuclear arms, has fuelled republican concerns over his nomination. in a letter to critics, chuck hagel says he did not remember and is about the 2007 report. gop senators stalled his nomination last week. >> the supreme court could make key decisions today and one involves affirmative-action. justices could rule on whether to severely limit the use of race and admissions programs at public universities and colleges. , also, the court will decide whether lawyers journalists and human-rights groups can legally challenge the constitutionality of a secret government program. it expands the authority of federal officials to conduct secret electronic surveillance of non-u.s. citizens located outside the u.s. and the justices will consider whether the sniff of a police dog and somebody sports constitutes a search and whether that requires a warrant. >> 3 maryland officials will hold a news conference today to urge congress to find a way to avoid the sequester. that will take affect the march

1st unless action is taken. montgomery county executive ike leggett, prince george's county executive rushern baker and howard county executive ken ulman will speak to reporters. the officials warned the sequester could have a damaging impact. virginia governor bob mcdonnell as also worried about the effects of the sequester. he has written to president obama asking and to keep his campaign pledge to reverse those automatic federal spending cuts. he says virginia would feel the cuts more than any other state because its heavy concentration of military assets. >> manti teo believes he is still a first-round draft pick and the cat fishing scheme he fell victim to will not affect him. he will face intense scrutiny when the nfl, begins tomorrow. in an exclusive interview, he says he just has to go out and perform an all the other stuff is behind and now. he said he shut down his twitter

it is better. chief meteorologist doug hill has more on what weather. >> it is just west of the metro area. rush hour will get through just fine. but live super doppler radar -- further out west and you get yourself a little bit of a look at the rain. but for now just some clouds around. the sun up just a couple of minutes from now and a very pleasant day as temperatures climb into the 50 degree range. temperatures comfortable and not come up for 30's across the area. if he spots north and west of washington below freezing but those temperatures will rise quickly as we get breezy conditions. southwesterly conditions -- for most of the area, look for increasing cloudiness, breezy, mild weather with scattered showers. that is the forecast. the next seven days we show temperatures taking a bit of a drop as we get through the next couple of days. back to windy and cold tomorrow
